This clinic, run by The Duchess (Milla Jovovich), is where women are sent to better themselves whether that be physically, emotionally, or mentally. At its center is the familiar fight over womens bodies, a battle that seems already lost when the story opens. She said that Paradise Hills is actually a fantasy film disguised as science fiction. The resort itself is a gallimaufry of modernist architecture half-overrun by ivy and flowers. Uma is a privileged young woman who is adamantly against marrying another Upper, Son. with updates on movies, TV shows, Rotten Tomatoes podcast and more. She performs a creepy choreographed song with lyrics that liken marriage to servitude and refer to Son as her salvation. The faceless presence of armoured, militarized police indicate that this is no happy ceremony. The initial concept of Paradise Hills is discomfiting enough to drive plenty of stories, but the script (from Waddington, genre fave Nacho Vigalondo, and Brian DeLeeuw) soon starts grasping for imagined dramas to push it to its final revelations. Paradise Hills posits that its entire world is a shell game built on outdated ideas and a resistance to originality, but its the film itself thats most woefully unable to ever go anywhere new.
