Californian George Carmack and his Tagish Indian friends, Skookum Jim and Dawson Charlie struck gold at Bonanza Creek in the Klondike. Where the Alaska Highway Starts Dawson Creek, BC is 700 miles north of the US/Canadian border. You should always fill up in these major towns: Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, Watson Lake, Whitehorse, and Tok. One of the least friendly roads in North America is the 414 mile Dalton Highway aka the Haul Road. North of Coldfoot, there is a 240-mile (386-km) stretch of road with no gas stations, restaurants, hotels, or any other basic services until the Prudhoe Bay oilfield at Deadhorse. Liard Highway, (Highway 77 in British Columbia and Highway 7 in the Northwest Territories) is an all-weather road linking northern British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. My daughter and son and law have made the trip x2 and are very nonchalant about driving that Alcan. Don't confuse this with Dawson City which is near Alaska and north of Whitehorse. By the time you get to Whitehorse (and then to the border and eventually to Anchorage or Fairbanks or Denali) and you spend a few days sitting still, allowing the vibration of the road to finally stop pulsating through your body, you actually start reminiscing about the solitude that the ALCAN provides and the peace you felt in those few days escape from the consumer driven rat race of the world. If we had more time or werent doing the Kenai Peninsula, then I would have spent a little time in this area of Glacier View since there are a lot of other epic adventures you can do here like white water rafting, ATV riding, and zip lining, along with some great camping spot . Winter services are VERY limited, especially food and lodging. Currently you have JavaScript disabled. These factors contribute to the high cost of gasoline in Alaska. I was ready for jagged mountains, glaciers, and epic hikes so we headed down to Valdez. Gas stations along the Alaska Highway can be found at regular intervals, but it is always a good idea to fuel up when available as some stretches between stations can be quite long.
