Invitational rhetoric differs from a traditional view of persuasive rhetoric that attempts to win over an opponent, or to advocate the correctness of a single position in a very complex issue (Bone et al., 2008). For this reason, the email to a boss should be composed using the existing rules and basics of professional communication. Persuasive messages are symbolic (using words, images, and sounds) and may be transmitted verbally or nonverbally, via media or face-to-face communication. This chapter can serve as a guide for how public speaking will pop up in your life once youve completed this class.
